For three millennia, the Psalms have been chanted, treasured and savored, first by the prophets and shepherds of Israel, then echoed by generations of Christians in every land and tongue. The 150 song-poems (in Hebrew, the “Book of Praises”) have been deemed the “school of prayer” by both our traditions, the backbone for daily communal ritual as well as private contemplation. They reflect the full range of human emotions — rejoicing and despair, thanksgiving and anger, grief and restored hope. And they reveal a God forever attentive to our bold cries and worthy of our superlative praise. Together we will delve into how and why these ancient poetic texts can still seep into our bones, and give powerful voice to our own hopes and longings, in daring dialogue with God who is ever near.
